Norfolk based wood turner Dennis Hales works with locally grown sycamore, holly, ash and maple; the white woods offer a natural canvas on which to incorporate a wide range of finishing techniques.
Dennis uses turned, carved, textured surfaces finished with water soluble dyes and metal leaf to enhance the natural features of the wood to achieve a sympathetic balance of form and finish. His work includes fruit displays, bowls and wall plates, with each piece unique in design. The plates and dishes which accompany the fruit are coloured to match and enhance the fruit pieces, this makes them an integral part of the piece rather than simply a holder for the fruit.
Dennis is a member of the Norfolk Contemporary Craft Society and the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain.
CARE OF COLOURED WOODS
All surfaces are sealed after dye is applied. This item should not be displayed in strong daylight (window sill area) or next to a source of heat.
Should be lightly polished with a soft cloth. A neutral (pale) paste wax can be used sparingly, taking care not to infill coloured lines
TEXTURED / MATT SURFACES
Use of soft brush or feather duster to remove dust. A cloth or duster should not be used on textured surfaces (i.e. plums, peaches).
Metal leaf transfer is sealed with a lacquer and only requires light dusting.
